31 days and 496 items. We’re DONE! How does it feel?
Our home is noticeably lighter, clutter free and happier! I’ve realized that every time I walk into a room in our flat now, I’m surprised to find it just about pile-free and infinitely more peaceful.
The stacks of projects to be finished or not-essential-items still needing to find a home were, subconsciously, weighing on my mind and body each day. It was one of those heavy, never ending, guilt and stress inducing kind of burdens that was so fed by my environment; I had no idea until I changed it! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a hoarder, and I could still see most surfaces in my home, but the sense of freedom I have gotten from simply removing those things I don’t need or don’t know what to do with has been unmatchable. And it’s inspired me to go well beyond the target of 496 items.
At the start of this journey, I wasn’t totally convinced it would be possible for me to complete the challenge. “Purge 496 items in a 740 square foot flat??? Not gonna happen! But it will be fun to try.” And on day 20, I found myself wondering whether we even own 500 items. (Of course, we do…)
Now that I’ve made it all the way through, I’m amazed to say that I didn’t even have to make any painful sacrifices. More than 75 pieces of old jewelry. Scary amounts of clothes (Oh, I miss those free boxes of clothing samples lying around the office! Truth is though, I won’t ever need 18 long sleeve running tops). Hangers, hangers and more hangers. Expired lotions and old makeup bags. Ribbons and gift boxes. A little bit of everything went, and it’s made an incredible difference.
Purging every day can be a challenge, but it has also been relaxing for me. This “free from stuff” feeling is driving me to continue sorting, tossing and donating on a more regular basis. And I just may make it a goal to repeat this month long challenge of 500 items at the change of each season!
